Summary: In the second part of The Hallowed War, author Tim Akers continues to build his world with considerable aplomb - three dimensional characters and intense action marking this far above the average fantasy thriller. | |

Ruling with an iron hand, the Church has eliminated the ancient pagan ways. Yet demonic gheists terrorise the land, hunted by the Inquisition, while age-old hatreds rage between the north and the south. Three heroes Malcolm and Ian Blakeley and Gwendolyn Adair must end the bloodshed before chaos is unleashed.
Tim Akers' first entered the world of The Hallowed War in The Pagan Night -a book full of clever world building and strong lead characters, that I hugely enjoyed. He returns to that world in The Iron Hound - and it's clear that his skills have only improved with time. The intricate landscape that he carefully drew in The Pagan Night is there from the off in The Iron Hound - meaning that Akers can instead concentrate on his characters - both those already introduced, and some whom the reader encounters for the first time.
At first glance, The Iron Hound seems to be set in the faux Celtic fantasy landscape that so many books tend to be set in. Aker's world is far more developed than many though - with intriguing conflicts forming the heart of this deep and vivid world. These conflicts lead to action - and it's here where Akers truly excels, writing scenes that are exciting and action packed. Giving the characters time to get to know and warm to the characters means that when Akers plunges them into action things become even tenser than they could be - the stakes are high and my heart was in my mouth at several points.
When I read The Pagan Night I enjoyed it, but stated in my review that I hope the next volume would improve on what Akers had begun - and I'm delighted that this has come to pass in The Iron Hound. Many thanks to the publishers for the copy, and before reading this book I recommend The Pagan Night - the first novel in The Hallowed War series - in which a fantastic world is built and populated with fascinating characters, setting the scene well for The Iron Hound.
