Summary: A glorious picture book looking at a naughty girl who just wants to make friends. It's anarchic, it's silly, it's hilarious. Highly recommended.

Hattie was bad. She put a frog in the fridge and tried to sell her baby brother for 20p. No-one would let their children play with her, so she tried being good - as good as she could possibly be. But the temptation... oh, the temptation to be bad. Can Hattie resist? Should she resist?

I loved Hattie the Bad. I'm really enjoying the anarchic glint that's creeping into many picture books at the moment, and Hattie is a fine example of that. There's plenty to gasp at, tut at, snigger at and laugh at. Naughty she may be, but she's got a heart - she just wants to have fun and hang out with nice friends. Jane Devlin's sense of comic timing makes every page a treat to turn to. And who doesn't love shouting "KNICKERS" as loud as they possibly can?

Joe Berger's illustrations throughout are just wonderful. They're bright, bold, zesty and they suit the text perfectly. I laughed uncontrollably for about a minute when I got to the page with the Frankensteined toy rabbit. It's the eyes that did it. I want a T-shirt with that poor rabbit on it!

Every young child will love Hattie the Bad. Every adult with a sense of silliness will love reading it with children. Buy it, read it, love it.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

For another picture book with an anarchic twist, check out Don't Read This Book! by Jill Lewis and Deborah Allwright. Slightly older children will love Sensible Hare and the Case of Carrots by Daren King.
