Mr Croc is definitely not sleepy. Well, he's playing his guitar, isn't he? And that is something which has to be done. A little bit later he's not sleepy because he's busy drawing. Then he's starting to feel the effects of all this activity and his bedtime snack is most welcome – although you have to remember that a crocodile has a rather large bedtime snack. A biscuit is not going to do for him. It's as well we reminded him about the drink as it's now necessary to go and get a glass of juice from the fridge and it's only when all this has been done that Mr Croc is ready to go to sleep and dream about whatever it is that crocodiles dream about…

Here at Bookbag we love Jo Lodge and in this board book with pop-ups and pull-tabs she's caught the mood perfectly yet again. We've all seen the delaying tactics which young children use to put off the inevitable bedtime for as long as possible until the eyes will quite simply stay open no longer. We start with Mr Croc doing something quite energetic. He might be wearing his pyjamas but that's not going to stop him playing his guitar. Pull the tab back and forth and he'll strum the guitar and dance along.

He's not quite as lively when he has some drawing which he must do. Pull the tab and you can see the lines appear on the page as he sprawls under the table with mouse watching his every move. Even he is beginning to acknowledge that he's going to bed soon as he has his bedtime snack – pull the tab and watch the over-filled sandwich move up to his mouth as his eyes slowly close as he puts it back on the plate. The drink is sucked up through a straw and then, finally, it's time for bed. On the last page there's a big surprise. I'm not going to tell you what it is but the first time any child sees it there are going to be squeals of delight and then after that it will be edge-of-seat anticipation and giggles.

The colours are bright and vibrant. There's absolutely nothing understated about this book! It's fun and it's clever. You must know a child who would love it.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
