It's the first day of summer, and when Cub wakes up, Mum suggests a walk in the forest together. As Cub and Mum explore Cub bombards his mum with questions (in true toddler fashion!) about the heat, about the length of the days, about the flowers and the birds. They spend a happy day together, enjoying the delights of summer until the sky grows darker and a thunderstorm approaches. Quickly, they run back home and as the storm rages they enjoy one more pleasure, snuggling up together for sleepy time!
This is a very simple, sweet little story. I liked the format very much, with Cub asking his questions and Mum patiently explaining everything to him. Fox mummies obviously have a lot more patience for this than real life mummies as she doesn't get at all frustrated and they just have lots of fun all day together! But it's a recognisable format to a day for a toddler, and it's nice to see them enjoying the simple things in life together - the birds singing, splashing in water, smelling the beautiful flowers.
The illustrations are what really bring this book to life. Cub and his Mum are beautifully drawn, with sweet faces and soft fur. There are little bugs and lizards scattered throughout the book, lushious green grass and summery blue skies. I love the little blue tits singing their hearts out in a tree whilst Cub and his Mum dance to their music! And even when the sky grows dark and the thunderstorm comes the artwork is beautifully atmospheric.
The gentle pacing of the story naturally lulls you as you read, moving from the excitement and happiness of the day into the warmth and comfort of their den and sleepy time. There's nothing particularly amazing about this book, but it's just so lovely that I found it very charming and it's certainly one we'll return to for repeat reads. Recommended for bedtime with toddlers.
