Poor old Truth Pixie. She's cursed! She can't speak unless it's to tell the truth. You might think this is a good thing because telling lies is bad, right? But sometimes the truth isn't nice and sometimes a white lie is okay and sometimes it's better to say nothing at all. You might not want to attract the attention of the school bully by calling him mean and nasty, for example, or you might not want to tell someone that you think their brand new haircut looks awful.

And this is Truth Pixie's curse. She loses a lot of friends by telling the truth and is very lonely. So she goes in search of a friend...

Oh, all the awws. All the really big awws. The Truth Pixie is a lovely rhyming story about being different and the power of friendship. It's funny and naughty, yes, but most of all it's uplifting. And it comes from the power duo of Matt Haig (the word man) and Chris Mould (the drawing man). What a team!

The rhyme is lovely and scans well, so is a pleasure - and easy - to read aloud. Sometimes, it's blunt and funny:

Every elf or pixie who asks me a question
Gets a horrible truth I can't help but mention
So, I'm stressed in bed and stressed on the loo
And the mouse in my hair has just done a poo

And sometimes, it's sweet and really rather profound:

There will be people you love
Who can't stay forever
And there will be things you can't fix
Although you are clever

And sometimes, it's positively inspirational:

You see your life is like a voice
How you use it is really your choice

I can't show you the images except for the cover up on the right there. But you all know Chris Mould, right? He's fab. And his drawings for this story range from the sweet to the scary to the hilarious. They're wild, full of energy and instantly arresting. I particularly loved the Hair Mouse and the page-sized troll mouth roaring in horror at hearing the truth about himself.

Production values are high and this story comes in a dinky hardback - it's one of those books that even smell nice. The Truth Pixie will make the perfect Christmas stocking filler or surprise gift of any season for any child you know - but especially the child who feels a bit different or needs a friend or just needs some cheering up for any reason at all. I loved it.

Don't miss The Girl Who Saved Christmas by Matt Haig and Chris Mould. And you might also want to look at The Midnight Gang by David Walliams and Tony Ross.
