When an apple falls on Cow's head, she gets all woozy so decides to go home for a bit of a lie down. She's got mild amnesia, so she goes from place to place on the farmyard, getting to meet all the animals, and causing all sorts of problems as she doesn't realise where she needs to go.

Kids love lifting flaps, and so Silly Moo immediately gets a thumbs up. They're full-page flaps, somewhat akin to a two-scene animation. Although hunting around the page for the bit that lifts up is usually more fun, it actually works really well here, as Cow sticks her head in nests, pigsties and chicken coops, sending the other animals scrambling around. There are many books that take you on a tour of the farmyard, but Silly Moo doesn't feel too samey.

Marina Le Ray's illustrations are bright, bold and expressive. From the ominously falling apple on the front page, through to seeing just how silly a moo she really is towards the end, the cartoony pictures accentuate the silliness of the tale. There are plenty of humorous touches that will have you giggling along. It's good, solid picture book fare - familiar and engaging, but with enough of a style of its own.

It's a very simple story, perfect for children moving on from board books without much plot. There is a little more text than other books of this ilk, and the laughs will also keep older kids coming back for more too. As a light-hearted farm tale, it ticks all the right boxes. The wide cast of characters gives plenty of scope for doing lots of silly voices as you read it, so could easily become a family favourite. Worth a look.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

Other fun farmyard tales include The Cow That Laid An Egg by Andy Cutbill, Ping Pong Pig by Caroline Jayne Church and Farmer Joe and the Music Show by Tony Mitton and Guy Parker-Rees. For a particularly exciting pop-up book, check out Zoom and Fly, Mr Croc by Jo Lodge. We also think you might enjoy This is a Serious Book by Jodie Parachini and Daniel Rieley, which is not a silly book. Honestly.
