A Counting Adventure! the subtitle of this book boasts. How exciting! I love numbers and counting, and so does a little boy I know. This one’s a bit old for him just yet – he’s the wrong side of 24 months – but I can’t wait to share it with him in the future. The item of question here is whether 0 is a number. After all, a number is something you can count. And if there’s 1 of something and you take 1 away, you’re left with a different number: 0
From this idea, the book progresses into quite a simple one on counting to 10 with the requisite number of each item clearly laid out. It doesn’t go much further and the idea of subtraction isn’t really explored, but it’s still a fun one to look through as the things you count are nice and random (Nine seagulls that are after Frank’s chips, for example. Hmpf. Bad seagulls!)
I think the point of 0 being a number (or not) will be a little lost on most young readers, who will be content instead to practice their normal counting skills. It’s quite a fun addition for parents, though, and gives something a little different from similarly themed books. At the end there’s even a post-script about what mathematicians say on the subject, clearly aimed at adult caregivers.
Sometimes a frivolous addition can distract from a book, but it doesn’t here. It may not add much for the kids, but it doesn’t take anything away, and so I’m not taking any stars away for it either. Overall, a fun, slightly different counting book. Recommended.
Thanks go to the publishers for supplying this book.
Of all the many counting books out there, we also recommend Elmer's First Counting Book by David McKee and Poppy Cat's Counting Adventure by Lara Jones while these critters also crop up in It Wasn't Me (The Hueys) by Oliver Jeffers.
