We all remember the best sort of school days, don’t we? Snow days. Waking up in the morning and seeing the glow of white through the curtains, and looking out of the window to see the whole world of our back gardens and rooftops turned white. This is a book all about that, and the only two people who turn up at school on this particular snow day.
What I love most about this book is the way it mixes the fantastical feel of a world covered in snow with the reality of childhood. It is a fantasy book, but it is set within a situation that all children either already are, or one day will be, familiar with. This makes it all the more magical, and I really have to applaud both the author and the illustrator for that. Richard Curtis, master writer though he is in television and film, has only written one other picture book, but if this one is anything to go by then I really hope he continues. This one is pitch perfect for children capable of reading on their own and I would be willing to put money on the fact that when not many people do turn up on snow day at school, teacher will be reading this book to them.
It feels like the kind of book that I used get lost inside of when I was in primary school myself. A lot of that is down to the illustrations by Rebecca Cobb, which are entertaining but also in some instances stunningly beautiful, capturing a snowy landscape incredibly well to show how vast the scope of it all, especially in the eyes of children.
Winter is the perfect time for snuggling up with a good book, and there is something in this which taps right into the excitement of the season, which makes it a perfect Christmas present, and a brilliant story. I cannot wait to read it to my son, and am sure he will enjoy it just as much as I did.
Other books which help capture the wonder of a winter wonderland are Snow by Walter de la Mare or Red Sledge by Lita Judge.
