The Second World War is almost lost but in a last, desperate roll of the dice the German High command launch Operation Finisterre. In America the apparent suicide of a scientist working on the atom bomb and off the coast of Spain the shipwreck of a German submarine, become catalysts as the plans spiral out of control, leading to a shattering climax. 'Finisterre' is a crime thriller packed with grit, suspense and style.

A new novel by Graham Hurley is an event to be anticipated and then savoured. In this regard, 'Finisterre' does not disappoint. Set towards the end of the Second World War it is a masterful work of fiction, blending crime and thriller into a spectacular whole. Fans of his Faraday and Winter collection will find everything that they have come to expect from an author at the height of his powers. For those that are new to Graham Hurley, and I would have to say, where have you been, you are in for a treat. Many talented and highly readable crime writers can be trapped in a formulaic style of writing but Hurley is a writer who is confident in his own ability and not frightened to take risks.

Starting from a brilliantly conceived premise the plot is intricate and fully developed as it crosses two continents linking seemingly unrelated events seamlessly. Blending historical facts with fiction and coupling this to a storyteller's genius and you have a winner. There is much to love in the writing of Graham Hurley. He has a freshness and simplicity in his style making his books impossible to put down. Meticulous detail is used to create an intense atmosphere but his sharp prose carries the story forward at a breakneck pace. 'Finisterre' is as gritty as the characters that he brings to life. Characters that will live in the memory long after the novel is finished. Caught in rapidly changing events, Gomez, the ex FBI agent and Portisch, the German U-boat commander, are drawn towards each other as their lives become inextricably intertwined and the finale is as shocking as it is surprising.

Across every genre of literature, there are the stars. If you have an interest in the genre, you will naturally gravitate towards them. Theirs is the world of the multi-million bestseller. Once you have devoured all they have to offer you look for the hidden gems. Graham Hurley is one of the gems. I have to confess to being a huge fan after discovering him a few years ago and I have to say that he has never disappointed. The variety within his work makes it a joy to simply sit and read. 'Finisterre' is the latest in a back catalogue of top-quality crime fiction and I cannot recommend it too highly.

If you enjoy Finisterre, you may also enjoy The Bones of Paris by Laurie R King , The Lady from Zagreb by Philip Kerr, Bryant and May and the Invisible Code by Christopher Fowler and Midnight in Berlin by James MacManus. We've also enjoyed Aurore by Graham Hurley and The Seamstress by Maria Duenas.
