Going to school is a huge milestone for any child, and it can be scary. This book works hard to stop it seeming so daunting, pitching itself really well to make school feel fun, exciting and like a very appealing adventure.

The illustrations are so colourful that my son couldn't wait to see what was coming next each time we turned the page. This was aided by the amount of flaps on each page, making it a book which kids will keep going back to in order to keep exploring. The ideas are very basic, and the text not particularly exciting, but this doesn't matter because of the amount of interaction the book offers to readers. All the flaps also mean that the book is entertaining for those children too young to read it, because they will still be able to engage with the text regardless. The author definitely knows which topics will be popular with the target audience (creepy crawlies always being a firm favourite in our house at least).

It has lots of really nice touches, which even start on the front cover of the book (Lydia Monkey), ensuring that it will definitely make any money you spend on it more than worthwhile, as I expect it will be a favourite for quite a long time. My only advice would be that it might be worth buying instead of borrowing from a library as flaps are always tempting for little fingers to pull off!

Stories really are a brilliant way to get children through important but scary events like first days of school, and I think Lydia Monks has found a good character with which to take children by the hand and lead them through this next step. I'm pretty sure when my son starts school, I'll be able to remind him of the day Mungo Monkey found out all about bugs at his school.

If you'd like to find out what else Mungo Monkey gets up to, you can find out in Mungo Monkey has a Birthday Party.
