Angry Birds Playground is a new educational book series based on a geographical theme. Rovio - the team responsible for the popular game - have teamed up with National Geographic Kids to create a stunning set of books that perfectly blend the cheeky humour from the game with informative text and breathtaking real-world photography. The series will appeal to young fans of the game and anyone who has an interest in the wonders of the natural world.
The books have a high-quality feel to them, with thick glossy covers and bright, colourful artwork throughout. At 130 pages each, these books are a lot more substantial than the average picture book and easily match the high standard expected from National Geographic.
Angry Birds Playground: Atlas opens with a comic-style story with our curious protagonists discovering an atlas book buried in the sand. They decide to explore each continent in turn and the result is a fascinating fact file comprising of maps, points of interest, landmarks, population and wildlife for each area. The back of the book has plenty of bonus material for review, including puzzles, mazes, quizzes and project ideas.
Angry Birds Playground: Animals has a gorgeous pair of panda cubs on the cover and is full of beautiful photographs of animals and birds. This time, the reader has to help the Angry Birds to find their missing eggs, which have been stolen by those pesky piggies. The birds travel the world, exploring rainforest, desert, ocean, grassland and polar habitats and meeting the creatures that live there. Again, there are some extra puzzles and quizzes at the back of the book and ideas for additional activities such as scrapbook making and art projects.
Angry Birds Playground Rain Forest sees those bad piggies return once again, and this time they are ruining the rainforest with their trail of litter. The Angry Birds are on a mission to stop them and learn about the wonders of the rainforest along the way. They explore the different layers of the forest, including the river basin, forest floor, understory, canopy and emergent, discovering the creatures that live in each layer. A handy glossary at the back of the book will help young children to understand some of the more technical terms used in the book.
Angry Birds Playground is an absolutely wonderful educational series and is packed with high-quality content from cover to cover. I can't wait to see what else the publishers have planned for this series. The books would make a beautiful gift for any child and as a home-educator, I plan to use the material as part of my lesson plans.
National Geographic has a reputation for producing eye-catching visuals and quality content. We recommend National Geographic Kids Infopedia 2016, a chunky, 352-page factual guide to the fascinating world around us that will appeal to young and old alike.
