This has to be one of my favourite craft books EVER. It is so fascinating to read how a simple lump of clay can be transformed into these little wondrous creatures. Each gnome or fairy model has so much character infused in to their facial features; it will surely make you take a double take. This is more than just a craft book because it entices you in to the magical world of fairies. Maureen Carlson's passion for her hobby is so empowering that you will soon find yourself a fellow fairy addict. The introduction of her book says it all really Opening the cover is like answering an invitation to explore a whole new world. Of course the choice is always yours. Once inside the pages, you could choose to close it up again and go your way, but, if you linger awhile, chances are you'll never be the same. That sums up this entire book in how it has seized my emotions; the gnomes, fairies are trolls are so enchanting you just want to make your own.
Whenever there is a background behind a craft, I truly believe it makes the hobby that much more interesting. And that is certainly what this book aims to do because each gnome or fairy has a story behind it. In fact, there are two particularly interesting little characters 'Woodpecker Pete' and 'Annabelle Mae' who are your sculpting and storytelling guides throughout the book.
Through reading this book I am totally geared up to get sculpting, I am imagining the satisfaction I will gain when I will produce one of these little guys. The book provides me with a list of all the equipment I need which I have already started buying. But again, this is the type of book you could just enjoy marvelling at even if you had no intention to ever sculpt. The pieces are so delicate and in detail that you just have to stop and marvel at them. For any of you interested you can see some of Maureen Carlson's work at Weefolf.com.
I just love the amount of imagination that has gone into this book, for example one of the projects is called 'The Secret Door' which is a little fairy door which you can place somewhere in your garden. Maureen Carlson advises that you install the little door somewhere special and then each time you look at the door let it become a trigger for your imagination.
Other projects in the book include:
- Ophellia Lilliana - Fairy Sprite,
- Oakheart Will - a tree
- The Green Man - a face with leaves all around it
- Boogen Brogge - The rock troll
- Theodore Funguy - toadstool gnome
- Humboldt the Fourth - curious troll
- The Forever Tree - a tree with a face and fairies sitting around it
- Olaf the Wise - a garden gnome
- Anna Belle Mae - the faerie folk storyteller
- Sweet William - the flower baby
- Pheobe Lu - the playful fairy
- Magical Mystical Marvin - the trickster elf
- Drey Van Elm - the elf king
- Isa Rosalia - the garden fairy
I really recommend you read this book even if it is just to marvel at the characters perfect features. The guidelines are excellent and I can't wait to get started in this fascinating craft. The wealth of inspiration in this book is sure to enthral any reader. A must-have book!!
