I do love a good bear story, and the bears in this one are wonderfully appealing. Sweetly drawn, in a gentle, loving story, this is a perfect 'winding-down' story. It's loaded with sentiment (I'm sure I'd be crying if I were pregnant!) and is just very sweet to share with small, snuggly, just out of the bath toddlers.
Our key characters are a grown up bear and a baby bear, and we see them go through various activities during their day, with the grown up saying what he or she loves doing with the little bear, everything from splashing in the bath to lifting the little one up high so they can see. We also hear about the different ways of showing love - touching noses, being with our friends - before finishing off with how much the big bear loves the little bear. Really, the sentiments are the usual 'I love you' thoughts that you get in picture books like this - the kind that you either love to share whilst reading aloud, or they make you cringe! The selling point for me is the illustrations. The bears are sweet, very sweet! Their faces are friendly and appealing, and I love how big the big bear looks, and how safe the baby bear seems with the big bear. I also like that the characters aren't fully explained, so the big bear can easily be daddy, or mummy, or granddad or grandma. The story is open to interpretation, depending on who is reading it aloud.
The colours through the story are very blue, with a real night time feel to them. They're drawn softly, with lots of smooth lines and other cute little animal characters popping up here and there. I think one of my favourite pictures is of the bears lying in the grass, looking up at the Northern lights in the sky, they both seem so relaxed and happy. Though I also love the picture towards the end of the big bear holding the little bear in his arms, looking at the baby with such love.
So, although there's nothing revelatory story-wise, it is a sweetly rhyming tale that's easy to read and full of emotion. It's the lovely illustrations that make this a special book to share, perfect for when you need to put the afternoon of naughty spots and tantrums behind you, and just spend a quiet five minutes together!
