Summary: A fantastic book about a lost penguin. Despite the cold Antarctic setting, it can't help but warm the cockles of your heart. Books of this quality come along once in a blue moon. Highly recommended. | |

Little Pip, a young penguin still slightly fluffy around the edges, enjoys playing in the sprawling Antarctic. When she chases a feather one day, she finds that she's lost, and embarks on an adventure to find her home - meeting up with other Antarctic animals in the process.
I absolutely loved Little Pip. It's such a wonderful story. It brings to mind the charm of the classics Love You Forever by Robert N Munsch and Are You My Mother? by PD Eastman. Pip is realistically drawn, but as cute as can be. Seeing her struggling against the snowstorm is heartbreaking (although, of course, never too scary). Her repeated sad comment of but that's not my home gives the book a nice rhythm. And how can you not love:
Where is home? Is it far or near?
Is a pebbly nest what we all hold dear?
No, home is where there's nothing to fear.
Since we're together, home is right here.
If that doesn't warm the heart, I don't know what will.
Jane Chapman's illustrations are gorgeous. They have a slightly more realistic style than her work in Bear Feels Scared and it suits the story perfectly. Even with bleak Antarctic expanses, there's a warm charm to everything. The layout of the text is also used to great effect to involve the reader in the story.
I could read Little Pip over and over again. It would make a perfect present for any young child. Everything about it is perfect. Books of this quality come along once in a blue moon. It couldn't come more highly recommended.
Thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
Bear Feels Scared by the same authors is also worth a look, but doesn't quite match the perfection of Little Pip. Fans of penguins will also like Penguin by Polly Dunbar and Peter the Penguin Pioneer by Daren King.
