Life’s boring in the burrow so Rupert rabbit decides to tunnel over to the neighbouring farm. There he meets a very bossy duck, Dora, who tells him that only animals who can do a job can live on this farm. What can a rabbit do?
'Rabbits Don’t Lay Eggs!' appears to be a rather unassuming board book of the sort stocked in supermarkets and discount book stores everywhere. Despite already owning a plethora of farm books, my toddler boy wasn’t as dismissive as me. He grabbed it straight away and stroked the glittery textured cover, tracing the inset image of the titular 'reeby'. The inside did not disappoint either. He settled down on his own to peruse the farmyard pictures, naming the animals as they appeared. Oh yes, and the red tractor too… always a toddler crowd pleaser. When Mummy showed up to read the words he appreciated the animal story if not the toilet humour of Rupert’s efforts to lay an egg that result in … well, not an egg and I don’t think you need me to explain what he did produce.
There’s a fair amount of story and words in 'Rabbit’s Don’t Lay Eggs!’. This is a board book for toddlers, not babies. The illustrations are sweet although not especially distinctive. The layout varies from full page pictures to comic strip splits. There’s a roll call of animals and a build as Rabbit finds out what each of them does. A bit of toilet humour (you are never too young) and two lively characters in the form of Rupert and the bossy and ever so slightly irritating, Dora Duck, give some substance to the story. There’s a positive message too – keep on trying and you too can find your talent.
Rabbits can’t lay eggs but they CAN do lots of other really useful things; this includes winning over a toddler, if not a Mummy suffering farm yard fatigue.
