What's all that noise just outside the bedroom window?

''DUGGER DUGGER DIGGER''

It woke our young pup up!

''DUGGER DUGGER DIGGER''

One look out of the window and we can see that it's a Dalmatian in a digger!

''DUGGER DUGGER DIGGER''

He's scooping up all the dirt and moving it to somewhere else. Have a careful look and you can see the worms wriggling out of the way as quickly as they can. Dalmatian has a high viz jacket on as well as a hard hat, but I don't think our pup should be climbing on the roof - but boys will be boys. It's not the only noise though. If you listen carefully you can just hear:

''BRMMM BRMMM WHEE''

What on earth can that be? Well, it's a camel in a crane and he's picking up logs and lifting them up high - and our pup is climbing on the logs. You're getting the picture, aren't you? Well, there's more to come: we've still got to see and hear the duck in a dump truck and a bear in a bulldozer. There's plenty of opportunity for making all the noises (and remember that this is big machinery so you'll need to be in good voice) and if our pup is anything to go by we're going to get absolutely filthy too.

As well as gazing in awe at the magnificent machinery, there are all sorts of other things to look at. There's a little mouse who appears on every double-page spread and sometimes he's quite well hidden - I had great fun finding out where he was hiding! There are nice little touches too, like the flower on the camel's hard hat - and there's room for discussion about why Dalmatian, Camel and Bear are all wearing hard hats, but Duck isn't! Should our young pup be wearing a hard hat as he's on a building site? Although nothing happens to the pup there's an opening for a discussion about whether it's safe for him to be acting the way he does.

It is a building site too - and all the animals are working very hard. It's obvious too that there's a lot of ''skill'' involved in what they do. On the final page we get to see what's been built. It's a rather splendid tree house for the pup - complete with a climbing rope, a tyre swing, a water slide and a pool. You can have quite a good discussion about the different ways to get into the house - with the favourite so far being a climb up the rope and a Tarzan leap across to the balcony.

It's a lot of fun to read, with more to it than you see at first glance, but will probably appeal more to boys than to girls unless you have a girl who is into big machinery (and why not?). I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

We've seen another [[Dog on a Digger: The Tricky Incident by Kate Prendergast|dog on a digger]] recently.
