Caitlin, Megan and Lauren are in the garden with their toy puppies Dylan, Buster and Daisy who magically come to life when they're whisked off to Sleuth City for their fourth exciting investigation. They arrive in the city just as a raid on a jewellery store is in progress. The pups and their owners are soon on the trail.

For girls who are just mastering the art of reading and who're in the five-and-just-over age group this book is a treat. If they love dogs, magic and and some adventure then it's going to be perfect. There are 106 pages of text and illustrations divided into eleven chapters. The young reader is not going to find that a chapter is too daunting as there's some sort of illustration on every page which helps to give clues as to what's going on.

The book is the right length to give a real sense of achievement when it's finished – it's a real book and a proper story rather than a picture book. The vocabulary is challenging (as it should be) but there's nothing there which is going to be too much of a problem particularly if there's a little bit of help given on the first reading. Peggy Dann's black and white illustrations are just the ticket.

It's a book which is likely to be read a few times and can be passed on to a younger sister without it being dated. As an added bonus it can be read as a stand-alone without difficulty. There are adverts in the back for the earlier books in the series but none of those 'sample chapters' which virtually force parents into buying more books in the series.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

If this book appeals to you we can also recommend an [[Missing (Mystery Pups) by Jodie Mellor and Penny Dann|earlier book]] in the series. We've also enjoyed [[:Category:Sue Mongredien|Sue Mongredien's]] books for this age group.
