Stinky the warthog lives in a neighbourhood with the Crocodile family, the Monkey family and the Littlebird family. One by one they invite Stinky round to play with their children, but his foul odour and the flies buzzing around him cause all manner of problems. Will he be able to find a friend? ...Well, yes, it says so in the title.

''Stinky!'' is a sweet tale about acceptance and being yourself. It follows the familiar formula of an outcast finding his place in the world, but with the expected silliness you get from a smelly warthog. Stinky is a sympathetic character, and you're hoping all along that he finds the friend he deserves. The supporting characters are all good fun, although none of them are ever really called upon to do much. It's a simple, gentle story that plays out nicely.

Lynne Chapman's illustrations add to the jolly and sweet mood. The look of crayons on textured paper gives everything a softness and friendliness - perhaps a little softer than is necessary, but it all works well. This is coupled with cartoony characteristics, especially when Stinky's flies are causing havoc. There's plenty happening on every page, which makes it great fun to rummage through.

Whilst everything is positive overall about ''Stinky!'', there isn't anything that makes it really stand out from the crowd. It's worth a look in the bookshop or library to see what you make of it. If it clicks with you, it'll make a fine addition to your bookshelf. There's plenty that you might like. It's not a must-read, or the sort of book that's crying out to be read time and time again, but there's still a lot to enjoy.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
