|summary=A simple story about a cat and her kittens, this is sure to be a hit with the pre-school gang.
}}
Cat is only doing the motherly thing and looking after her kittens when tragedy strikes. As she goes off to find them food, she accidentally gets whisked away in the fishmonger’s van. How will they survive? When night falls, who will protect them from the baddies that lurk on the streets? Sometimes, though, friends can come in the most unlikely of forms, and in this case it’s Dog. He’s no substitute mum, though. Will Cat find her way back to her brood?

This is a book that can be read on many levels, and I loved that about it as an adult who appreciates this might be read again and again: this way, there’s always something new to think about or pick up on. I especially liked the way the story evolved, in terms of the animals’ friendship but also in terms of the backdrop, from the scary city with the busy roads and the urban graffiti, to the seaside where there are boats and waves, fresh air and of course…fresh fish too.

[[:Category:Michael Foreman|Michael Foreman]] has done some great books and this is just the latest. It is a tale that is both cute and classic with delightful illustrations to boot, and although there’s a tiny bit of fear when Cat goes missing, it’s not prolonged and builds to a wonderful sense of relief when they are all reunited. The messages are good, positive ones, about making friends and not being put off by prejudices, and there’s also a feeling that this is a satisfying, simple life for the animals, where nature is to be valued over technology or modern conveniences.

This is a fine book for the pre-school gang, either for bedtime reading or for sharing in nursery story time. The hardback is sturdy and although the pictures are detailed, they would do well being held up for a class to look at together. Highly recommended, I would like to thank the publishers for sending us this book.

[[The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr]] is another popular one for this age group.
