The Railway Rabbits: Fern and the Dancing Hare by Georgie Adams
In this third episode of the delightful The Railway Rabbits series Barley is taking his five children to meet his parents for the first time. Their mother, Mellow, is staying at home to look after the burrow and, as she wryly comments, tidy up the mess that five young rabbits have left. Smart, tidy and clean behind the ears the rabbits head off to meet Blackberry and Primrose Longears. The journey to the big burrow under the castle is full of adventure – and there's even more when they reach the big burrow.

Boys and girls in the six plus age group will love these books. The black and white illustrations by Anna Currey complement the text beautifully, adding details and giving clues where the text might need just a little help. They also break up the pages so that the young reader isn't faced with too large an expanse of text to start with.
They're real stories too, with an adventure that will interest the young reader and make them want to know what happens next. There's every encouragement to keep reading. It's a real credit to Orion books that there isn't the regular 'first chapter of the next book' to 'encourage' parents to buy another book. You may well want to buy the next book because it's likely to be of a good standard, but it won't be pester power which forces you into it.
The vocabulary is sufficiently challenging without being daunting and the chapters are of an ideal length for a young reader – or even to read as a bedtime story. It's also a book which will stand repeated reading and this – and the rest of the series – is one of the better investments in early readers.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
In this series we were equally delighted with Berry Goes to Winterland and Wisher and the Runaway Piglet.
