Summary: It might be the year of the Olympic Games but Horrid Henry isn't restricted to the sports where you get the medals. A great book for (mainly) boys who are getting past the 'working it out' stage of reading. | |

Horrid Henry is back with another book of freaky facts and random trivia. We loved his book about Bodies and this time the lovable lad (well, I'm sure that's what his mother said...) is back with a book about sport. And in the year of the London Olympic Games, what could be more suitable? It's not just a crammer for every sport in the Games or the background to the Games themselves. This is the book which swoops into the World Cow Poo Throwing Contest and delves into the Bog Snorkling Championships.
It's a great book for the child who is getting past the 'working it out' stage of reading. Chapters are usually no more than half a dozen pages long, so there's a regular sense of achievement when you see a new heading coming up. There are plenty of illustrations by the redoubtable Tony Ross and they'll give the occasional clue to what's going on as well as giving a giggle on a regular basis. The vocabulary is challenging - and some adult help might be needed on the first read - but it's all relevant and interesting.
The book is more geared to the boys than the girls but there's a wide enough range of sports included to ensure that the girls are not going to feel adrift. The facts are interesting and not all of them are common-place - for example, how many people know the origin of the word hockey or that surfing originated in western Polynesia three thousand years ago? This book is definitely not going to leave your child feeling patronised!
It's great fun, easy to read and above all informative. what more do you need to know?
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
