A really enjoyable read which has got me looking forward to the next in the series, this is a definite recommendation for fans of this kind of urban fantasy, and I’m nearly impressed enough to suggest it’s worth trying book 2 to see if you enjoy it more than I did given the strength of this one. | A really enjoyable read which has got me looking forward to the next in the series, this is a definite recommendation for fans of this kind of urban fantasy, and I’m nearly impressed enough to suggest it’s worth trying book 2 to see if you enjoy it more than I did given the strength of this one. | ||

Warning, major spoilers for book 1 and book 2 book 2 lie below!
Nick Gautier has just found out that the mysterious being he thought was his uncle is actually his future self. Over the course of the past 2 books, the majority of other people he’s close to –- apart from his unsuspecting mother – have been revealed to be some form of demon. Oh, and apparently, he’s got the potential to be the person who will end the world. When someone starts spreading vicious rumours about other students at his school, you’d hardly think it would register with him given everything else going on, but he dives in to try and trace the perpetrator with help from Bubba, Mark, and various others.
Okay, the past two books have confused me because there’s been so much going on that I couldn’t really understand it, especially given my lack of familiarity with the adult series that this is a spin-off from, the Dark Hunters. This is actually the easiest to follow by some way – Kenyon does a much better job of giving people who aren’t fully up to speed enough information to let us work out what’s going on – but confuses me in a whole new way.
That is, I can’t quite believe this is written by the same person as Invincible. I was close to giving up on the series after that one, finding Kenyon’s writing style incredibly annoying and more like an adult author imagining the kind of things teens wanted to read rather than a book actually written for teens. This is light years better – I’m not sure whether it’s been edited more closely, or something, because surely there has to be some major reason for the massive improvement. It’s pacy, it has some fantastic dialogue, and while it gets a little preachy here and there, it’s got a strong message and an exciting plot. Having said that, the relationship between Nick and his mother – who supposedly loves him but doesn’t trust him to do anything at all right – is starting to irritate me, but it’s a minor flaw given how much this surpassed my expectations overall.
A really enjoyable read which has got me looking forward to the next in the series, this is a definite recommendation for fans of this kind of urban fantasy, and I’m nearly impressed enough to suggest it’s worth trying book 2 to see if you enjoy it more than I did given the strength of this one.
I think teenage fans of Kenyon will really enjoy The Dark Divine by Bree Despain.
