|summary=This is a difficult read. And not because We tend to think of the dark subject matter – that'll come later – Maria Callas as Greek, but because of the way she was born to Greek parents in which it's told. This might put a lot of readers offManhattan, New York, in December 1923 and only moved to be honest it'd be hard to blame themAthens when she was thirteen. Kraus tells the story in a distinctive voice unlike any other I've read; an erratic dialect with heavy and frequent slang. The immediate effect is disorientating and distracting, and Her original surname was Kalogeropoulos but her father changed it takes some time to feel natural. It's a struggle to acclimatise to JodyCallas's voice, to make it more manageable in the States. When she was back in Athens - supposedly so that she could get acquainted with his mannerisms, but appropriate training for her voice - she was raised under the story wouldn't be the same without it, Nazi occupation by a mother who mercilessly exploited her and somehow it works.
