Amelia should be looking forward to spending Christmas with her older cousins, but she can't help feeling overwhelmed. The house that they are staying in is big and foreboding and she is very small for her age. Even worse than that, her cousins have a HUGE dog that seems to seek her out at every opportunity. Can't they understand that she is terrified of dogs and just leave her alone?
One day, Amelia runs away from the big dog and hides in the loft room, where she thinks she will be safe. There she discovers a trunk of old clothes and a diary that belonged to her great-great grandfather, which he wrote as a young child growing up in America. The diary tells of his discovery of a young wolf cub, which he tries to keep hidden to keep it safe from hunters. As Amelia becomes absorbed in the story, she finds herself magically transported to the world of the diary where she must help Noah to reunite the cub with his mother.
The Winter Wolf is a heartwarming seasonal tale and would make an ideal gift for any child that loves animals. The cub 'Frost' is absolutely adorable and helps Amelia to overcome her fear of dogs. The relationship between Noah and Amelia is also very sweet, as he obviously doesn't realise that she is his great-great granddaughter, but feels an instant bond with her as she reminds him of his deceased younger sister.
Holly Webb writes this kind of story incredibly well and always manages to capture the human/animal relationship perfectly. I enjoyed the time travel aspect of the story, as well as the interesting twist at the end.
Many thanks to the publishers for my review copy, which I will treasure. The cover artwork is gorgeous.
The Reindeer Girl is a perfect companion book to Winter Wolf, as it has a similar theme, as well as the same time travel element.
