Martha and her bunny brothers are going on holiday to the seaside and it's charming. They’re in a vintage camper van, and while a traffic jam holds them up a bit, they're soon on the beach and ready to swim. Well, Martha is. But the boys don't want to so instead they have sandcastle building competitions, and a picnic and a paddle and some ice creams. Every time Martha mentions the sea, a new plan emerges. Will anyone ever go in the water with her?
This is a slightly bizarre book because of its presentation (scatty writing, sometimes inside illustrations, jumping around the page, using every font in the book) but the story is cute and I quickly warmed to it. It just seems so inherently British – from the egg sandwiches and cartons of juice to burying Dad in the sand to making scrapbook at the end of the day to the point where, well, yes, it starts to rain.
It’s perfect for this time of year whether you’re going on a day trip or for a few nights away, and it makes camping seem like the most fun thing in the world. Who needs an aeroplane or a fancy hotel where people speak funny languages when you can have a super van that has magic beds, and room to take all your prized possessions with you? Not to mention that the dog can come too.
This book is fun with lots to look at on each page, and details to notice and discuss as you read. It's lovely for sharing together and using to get excited about an upcoming trip of your own. Recommended.

Clara Vulliamy has lots of other fun books too, so take a look. We particularly enjoyed Dotty Detective. You might also enjoy Tilly's At Home Holiday by Gillian Hibbs and Little Tiger's Big Holiday by Mark Marshall.
