Gus is a beagle, who stands upright with his tail held high and in this delightful little book he tells us about his day. He shares his garden with a couple of tortoises called Dido and Hector, but only in summer as they disappear in winter. He's a dog who loves his comfort and we see him having his tummy tickled, snoozing, curled up in a chair and making artistic designs on a white duvet with his muddy paws. He's always alert though – and squirrel knows when it's best to make himself scarce, as do some plump pigeons.

There are adventures to be had too. There's a golden retriever in the park who has rather taken his fancy, a fox to be hunted down and a trip in a boat, which didn't appeal at all, particularly when the ducks were laughing at him. Food is never far from his mind whether it's a bag of cookies to be raided, some food on the table to be scavenged or his own bowl of food. And then it's to bed for a snooze.

Fiona Louise Bate has written and illustrated Gus and whilst the story is a simple retelling of a day in the dog's life the illustrations are a delight with the gentle colours and muted tones capturing a dog who has a great love of life and some adoring owners. The vocabulary is ideally suited to the newly confident reader, although the descriptions of the female golden retriever in the park might provoke some questions!

I'd like to thank the publisher for sending a copy to The Bookbag.

Younger children will love Dogs by Emily Gravett, but the confident reader might enjoy Marley: A Dog Like No Other by John Grogan.
