Rob Baker is an ethnomusicologist who lived in West Africa for eight years. It is from this period of his life that he draws the majority of his inspiration for writing, and his books are broadly biographical, based upon his rich and varied experiences in Africa. Rob's first degree (Leeds University) was in music and French, and he holds a PGCE from Oxford University. In 2013, he gained an MPhil from Birmingham University, based upon research into the traditional music of Benin.
His first book, 'Adventures in Music and Culture' was published in 2012, and recounts his musical work and travels in Benin and Togo. In 2016, Rob was commissioned to write the educational book: '50 Things You Should Know About Music', which covers a wide range of musical concepts, eras and geographical locations. This year, he released 'Toubab Tales', which tells of his adventures in Mali, culminating in a military coup and his family's evacuation from the country.
Rob is now based in southern England, where he works as a music teacher and jazz pianist.
