It's three years since Nanette Weston left Monaco. She'd been engaged to a Formula 1 racing driver and had lived the life of the wealthy but a serious car accident had ended all that. The accident could have killed her fiancé and she lost her driving licence because of the alcohol she'd consumed. Her slow recovery was hindered by the end of her engagement but she's found some contentment in being a nanny to two young children. When her friend and employer, Vanessa, remarries and takes an extended honeymoon in the Amazon Nanette is asked to take the children back to Monaco where their father lives.
Follow Your Star is a book with real atmosphere. I hadn't realised the extent to which the Grand Prix takes over the city of Monaco and even for someone who isn't by any means a fan of the sport the detail was riveting. I could hear the noise of the cars and smell the fumes as I read. Vanessa's hot and steamy trip up the Amazon left me wanting to shed some clothes and I empathised with the problems of the villagers she lived with. Their honesty and naivety contrasted with the ruthlessness of those out to exploit them and I could only fear for their future.
I'll confess to having wanted to smack Nanette and tell her not to get involved with Zachary Ewart, her ex-fiancé, under any circumstances. A man who would ship you back to the UK when you were badly injured and then have no further contact with you is not to be trusted, but Nanette still has no memory of what actually happened when her car crashed. She's unhappy too that the father of the children she's looking after seems to be involved in some shady dealing and even more concerned when she realises that Zachary is into something criminal and is trying to involve her too.
It's a story about greed on the part of those who already have plenty and although there is some romance it doesn't play a dominant part in the book. There's more of a plot than you'll find in most chick-lit books and you're not going to be able to work out on page twenty exactly how it's all going to end. If you're looking for an interesting light holiday (or wet winter's afternoon) read then you really could do a lot worse than this book.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag. We also have a review of Rendezvous in Cannes by Jennifer Bohnet.
If this book appeals then you'll also enjoy River Deep by Maxine Barry.
