If only he hadn't met that dog who wanted to play with that ball, the Queen's birthday might not have been ruined and he wouldn't be the most embarrassed person in the whole world!

At first I thought I wasn't so keen on this book as it really is quite simple and with illustrations that aren't as bright and colourful as some other picture books that are around these days. However upon further reading it really is quite a charming package, with a lovely premise and a story that unravels over each page, turning from playing with a dog to ruining the Queen's birthday celebrations in front of the world's press.
As I already mentioned, it is written very simply which makes it an easy book to read with anyone of any age. I can see it being enjoyable to try and work out what is going to happen next, maybe even filling in parts of the story yourself which is a good thing for young children's imaginations, as well demonstrated within some of the pages in Maurice Sendack's Where the Wild Things Are.
The illustrations aren't as bold as they could be, but with a lot of small details in the more extravagant pages which make it interesting to get up close and find every piece of mayhem that the dog is causing throughout the book. The colour palette is very nice as well, and whilst not wildly bright, the skylines are actually beautifully coloured in pastels and blues which tie the pages together nicely.
I think this is a lovely, almost old school, picture book which a lot families will enjoy together as a fun story. With enchanting twists and turns, you will enjoy watching events unfold as the boy and his new found dog go on a romp around London causing mayhem along the way.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
If you enjoyed this then I think you would probably like The Odd Egg by Emily Gravett or The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr.
