Lions is part of the wonderful Animal Lives series, each focusing on a particular animal from the African savannah. This time, the king of the beasts takes centre stage, in a book that mixes stunning photography with plenty of fascinating facts and figures.
The photographs in the book really capture the personality of the lion pride. We see a close family group huddled together, adorable cubs at play, a lone lioness sprinting in pursuit of a zebra and the wide-gaped roar of an adult male lion, showing off those deadly teeth. The pictures are sharp and bold and full of detail.
Each page has an introductory paragraph on a particular aspect of pride life and the language is kept simple sao as not to overwhelm young readers. The text is arranged around a large central image and individual facts are dotted around the edges of the page in bright boxes and bubbles that add to the visual appeal of the book. We learn about lion types, predators, lion senses and lions under threat with an easy-read format that is identical to the other books in the series.
Lions is a beautiful picture book and I really enjoyed looking at the images of the cubs, who looked so tiny and vulnerable next to the adults. Big cats hold a special fascination with most young animal-lovers and this book would make an ideal gift for any child with an interest in the natural world. Many thanks to the publishers for my review copy.
If you enjoyed "Lions", why not try the other books in the series? Bookbag recommends Animal Lives: Cheetahs and Animal Lives: Giraffes.
