This is a classic poem which has been brought to life in a lovely picture book which is perfect for the run-up to Christmas and close after. It captures perfectly the sense of joy around Christmas for young children.
I always enjoy it when old language is visited in books for children because it isn’t talking down to them, it is letting them just enjoy the sound and shapes that words make, and there is a certain gravitas to the language which makes it simply satisfying to hear and to speak, regardless of how much is or isn’t understood.
This book lends itself to being read in quiet moments, at bedtime or as a family, and very much manages to bring to life that growing, building excitement before Christmas. It feels as old fashioned as the poem is, but I mean that in a completely good way. The classic poem juxtaposed with really good, modern and evocative illustrations make this a wonderful book to give as a Christmas present, or to buy for the family to enjoy together.
I think this is a very nice way of introducing classic poetry to children, and will go down a treat over the holiday season, helping everybody from every age get in the mood for Christmas.
If it's modern cosy Christmas classics you're looking for, then you really must make sure to read Stick Man by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. We also have a review of Peacock Pie: A Book of Rhymes by Walter de la Mare.
