Christmas is a time of joy and goodwill to all men, but it can also be a time of bad weather, of being stuck in the house and feeling like you have nothing to do. The holiday period can need filling and for a crafty kid there are loads of activities that can be done simply by using paper; including creating their own decorations or making the best letter they can for Father Christmas. If only there was a handy book that contained loads of great Christmas crafting ideas in one place.
Lo and behold if this very book is not Christmas Paper Play by Lydia Crook, 100+ pages of craft ideas that are all based on festive fun. The book itself come in a sturdy A4 format on flexible card which makes the crafting easier. Why is this? Because the book itself is often the material needed. More than one page requires you to cut the page out of the book or draw on it. For some bibliophiles this can be similar to destroying the book, but Christmas Paper Play has been designed for this very purpose in mind and a child should be allowed to do with it as they wish.
For the right child this book has many great ideas all linked to Christmas. Bear in mind that although the book would make a perfect Christmas gift, the majority of the activities won't be quite as compelling after the day. This book is better given as a pre-Christmas gift on the run up to the big day. Handing over the book on December 1st would give the whole family plenty of time to make their own decorations or stockings. Having a few homemade things around the place is always nice and a great way of bringing the family together.
Crook has created pages of good ideas and has made them very simple to execute. Some are in black and white and need colouring, whilst others may be in colour and need cutting out. Almost everything that you can think about is covered in some crafty way; advent calendars, decorations of all variations, finger puppets etc. Crook has written some simple instructions on each page, sometimes these are statements of fact, but they all make sense – rip up this white page to make snow.
By breaking down the wall between a book and crafting, Crook has created a book that is the activity. True, you can only use it once, but there is no stopping you trying the ideas out on your own card. If it is a rainy day before Christmas and all through the house, there is nothing to do, not even play on a computer mouse – you could do a lot worse than try out some of the many crafty creations available in Christmas Paper Play.
There are more Christmas Craft books to check out including Making Christmas Tree Decorations by Judy Balchin, or you could try the author's earlier book Paper Play by Lydia Crook.
