Rob is a burglar who is very, very bad. Bob is his dog, who is very, very good. Well, as good as a dog whose owner is a burglar can be...
This is a bright, colourful book aimed at teaching young readers the difference between good and bad. It is laid out in a comic book style, with various different pictures on each page, giving plenty for readers to engage with, making it an ideal book for sharing between adults and children.
Its premise is excellent; Bob is a very good dog, but his owner is a baddie, a burglar called Rob. Bob wants to go and be a good dog, but he is too loyal to leave his owner. It has a very nice bold and clear style both in its illustrations and story, with a good ratio of text on each page ensuring it remains readable throughout. The story moves along at a good pace and is easy to follow, with plenty of great touches on each page to keep everyone entertained.
Though a small part of me can't help but think it might have been nice for Rob to reform his burgling ways, as this would be a good message for young children, it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the book at all. My three year old really liked reading it with me, pointing out details and remembering the story and message even after we had finished reading. I'd definitely recommend borrowing it from your local library to find out how Bob gets out of his predicament - whilst remaining faithful to his owner, of course!
This is the author's first picture book, and whilst the text itself isn't always as humorous as it has the potential to be, I would hazard a guess that Sue Pickford is going to get stronger and stronger in the pre-school market.
If this book appeals then you might also appreciate The Highway Rat by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler and The Dog Detectives: Lost in London by Fin Gypsy, Zoa Gypsy and Monika Suska. For another story about a dog, we can recommend Barney the Boat Dog: Very Brave Dog by Linda Newbery.
