Ellie Walters is 36, divorced and keen to start a new life away from her cheating and control-freak ex-husband. Fulfilling a life-long dream, she decides to take her 15-year-old son, Tim, to live with her in the small town of Bourne. As she soon becomes good friends with her next-door neighbour, Louisa Amory, Ellie finally feels she is making a life of her own. She begins to feel a sense of freedom and independence but for how long? When strange events start occurring Ellie is forced to face some painful and guilty memories connected to a tragic accident nineteen years ago; memories which she would rather forget. It is clear that someone has discovered her well-kept secret and is reluctant to let her forget about it. As a campaign of terror against Ellie unfolds she must come to terms with what happened all those years ago and try to discover who her tormentor is. Vulnerable and afraid, she relies on Louisa's friendship to help her through the ordeal. However, when a misunderstanding causes a rift between Ellie and Louisa's son, Joe, the women's friendship is threatened. Alone and afraid, she suddenly finds herself trapped in a nightmare from which she must do all she can to escape.
This is without doubt one of the most gripping, intense and on-the-edge-of-your-seat books I've read in a long time. The best part is I wasn't expecting any of it. I sat down to read it with an open mind having never come across Brooke Morgan's work before. I wasn't waiting for anything particularly exciting to happen and I certainly wasn't expecting such an intricate plot. I'm so glad I had no idea what was in store for me because not knowing made it much more riveting. There are so many unpredictable twists that each time I came to one I would find myself holding my breath or jumping up and down in my seat.
The plot is brilliantly crafted and very fast-paced, with dramatic parts thrown in where you least expect them. I was certainly kept on my toes and no matter how hard I tried to guess what was round each corner, I never got it right. There were times when I felt really confident of where events were heading or who had done what but Morgan was always one step ahead of me. However, this book isn't all about action. The characters provide a very rich source of thoughts and emotions and this alone is enough to absorb you.
Whilst reading I was reminded of Anita Shreve's work, which is gripping, emotional and cleverly written. Morgan has masterfully spun a web of fear, excitement and intrigue into a story I will be hard pushed to forget. I often felt I was watching a crime or horror film when you experience that dramatic irony and you find yourself shouting at the characters, feeling scared for them. There were times when I got so involved and caught up in it that I forgot where I was which proved rather embarrassing on a number of occasions.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.
If it's drama you want, this book has it. If it's suspense you want, this book has most definitely got it and if you'd like to get away from reality a few hours each day, look no further. This book is the perfect escape route. You might also enjoy The Woman Before Me by Ruth Dugdall.
