Ted is excited. Well, let's be honest - he's out of control, dashing around the house and yelling Faster, Rudolph, Faster. Poor Rudolph is in Ted's truck for the moment, but he's looking as worried as all the other toys. Christmas is coming, but the trouble is that it's not coming fast enough. And then the questions start. Poor Big Bear is bombarded with Is it Christmas yet? every few minutes. Big Bear's more patient than I could be and keeps saying soon in a soothing voice which eventually turns to a growl. Explaining what needs to be done before Christmas arrives doesn't help, as Ted offers to help. And we all know how much help that sort of help is...
Wrapping the presents proved sticky and finding the tree was more difficult than might have been expected - and let's not think about getting it into the house. Eventually Ted ended up in tears. Isn't it always the way? But a cuddle and some constructive work on the Christmas tree helped, just in time for - Christmas.
It's a board book with a lovely squashy cover, rounded corners (less damage when thrown) and pages full of brilliant illustrations. Unusually for a board book it's got a decent story and one that will be appreciated by the adult and the child. Every grown up will recognise the overheated atmosphere which fuels the run up to Christmas and this could just be a gentle way of telling junior that it won't come any quicker if you get into a state about it. Showing the problem in another family can sometimes be the gentlest way of getting the point across.
I like too that there's only one parent in evidence and that parent is male, because not every family has two adults sharing the care and not every person (or bear!) delivering the child care is female. It's refreshing.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy of the book to the Bookbag.
Here at Bookbag we love Jane Chapman and we've recently been impressed by No More Cudddles!. For another board book with a stary, have a look at Bear and Hare: Where's Bear? by Emily Gravett.
