Summary: Two girls, four boys and one music festival. A warm and honest contemporary look at teen friendships, love dilemmas, prejudice and the pitfalls of celebrity worship. Non Pratt offers sensitive, emotive writing with well-drawn characters but without the wow factor. This is why it just misses out on a four star rating. Includes bad language, sexual content and drug references. | |

Kaz and Ruby have been best friends for a long time but their lives are about to change irrevocably. Ruby has a sassy, devil may care outer shell that hides her vulnerability but where do her loyalties really lie? Kaz, short for Karizma, thinks she knows what she wants but what does she really need? Stu longs to shake off his bad reputation and win back the love of his life while Tom is unsure of what he wants and takes the coward’s way out. Meanwhile Ruby’s brother Lee and his boyfriend Owen have some of their own decisions to make. Throw into the mix an arrogant pop star, secrets, betrayal, jealousy, misunderstandings, new faces and some bad choices and the ingredients are there for an explosive weekend.
Non Pratt writes confidently and sensually with allusions to pop culture, tattoo art and cheeky sexual innuendos. She also focuses on "the sensation of sound" when you feel lost in a song, the internal battle that can rage between love and lust, nostalgia, revenge and the way alcohol can cloud judgement. At the heart of her story is the importance of friendship and how you should tell the truth about what you have done and how you are feeling.
Although "Remix" is an accomplished teen novel, it only offers two narrative voices, Ruby and Kaz. It would have been interesting to directly hear from Stu and Tom’s perspectives too.
For more friendship faux pas, witty dialogue and boyfriend dilemmas try The Boy Book by Emily Lockhart, Extreme Kissing by Luisa Plaja and Split by a Kiss by Luisa Plaja. Make sure you also check out Plaja’s frothy, flirty "Diary of a Mall Girl". Alternatively if you would like a young adult romantic novel with a compelling plot that tackles multiple contemporary themes read Salvage by Keren David which is centred round the dual narrator siblings Cass and Aidan and their love interests Will and Holly. And for something with a little “je ne sais quoi " pick up Ooh, La, La, Connie Pickles by Sabine Durrant.
