Poor old Beast just wants a quiet life, resting in his peaceful garden after a long day’s work. Unfortunately, his peace is soon shattered by a cry of help from some islanders who have fled their homes after hearing a scary noise. Beast is asked to investigate; after all, he is the biggest and bravest beast around, isn’t he?

The Brave Beast sees our hairy hero trekking through spooky jungles, deep dark caves and deserted towns in search of the source of the mysterious noise: Warrrroooooooooooooooo!!! I’m not going to spoil the story by revealing the source of the noise, but suffice to say the book has a happy ending and has just the right level of scariness to keep little readers on the edge of their seats throughout the story.

The artwork in the book is lovely, with bold, quirky pictures, packed with detail. The beast himself is a black, hairy mass with two yellow circles for eyes, but his personality really comes to life on the pages. I loved the different spooky settings on the island, especially the forest and cave, where we get to trace our fingers around the wiggly route that the beast takes to get to his destination. My son laughed out loud all the way through the book. He absolutely loved it.

The Brave Beast has more text than an average picture book, which makes it ideal for more confident readers to tackle alone. But of course, the true joy of this book is sharing, using your storytelling skills to crank up the tension to maximum! This is also what makes the 'big reveal' at the end of the book so funny, with both parent and child letting out a huge sigh of relief at discovering the identity of the monster.

I cannot fault this book. It has everything a children’s book should have; a great plot, interesting lead character and bold artwork. It is a book to cherish and share again and again. I look forward to reading more in this series.
