Summary: Two women form a new friendship due to a random happening. Emma accidentally left her wallet whilst posting a letter and Nina found it and returned it. Before long, the two women are seeing each other quite regularly, arranging dinner parties and even planning to share a holiday. Did this all stem from a genuine act of kindness though or is something a bit more sinister happening? It seems that Nina’s motives may not be what they appear to be on the surface. | |

Emma is a harassed young mother to a toddler with another baby on the way. Used to being a successful professional, she is finding it difficult to cope with everything on a daily basis. Therefore, it hardly surprises her to receive a call from a stranger telling her that she has found her wallet which Emma did not even realise that she had lost. Nina calls round with the offending wallet and Emma is immediately drawn to this composed, organised, successful woman whose life seems to epitomise everything that Emma wishes for. However, as their friendship blossoms, it becomes apparent to the reader, although not to Emma, that things are not what they seem. Apparently when Nina first set eyes on Emma, she recognised her as a face from the past, and an unwelcome one at that. We soon discover that Nina has an ulterior motive for befriending Emma as she sets out to seek revenge for something that Emma did many years ago.
As you can imagine, this is a story packed with intrigue and suspense. As you're reading, the tension rises steadily and relentlessly and the anticipation of what may be to come makes this a compelling read. The two women each tell the story, each from their own point of view and this helps to make this perfect reading. There is the contrast between Emma’s chapters full of naiveté and trust, and Nina’s full of calculation and ruthless determination. The chapters overlap in their chronology which means that you read about many of the events twice but from differing perspectives.
Along with being an intense, edge of the seat, psychological thriller, it also explores the frustrations and loneliness of motherhood and how that can make you vulnerable. This is a thoroughly compelling read and one that is very difficult to put down. You will want to keep on reading in your quest to find out what Nina wants to get from Emma and just exactly how far she will go in order to get it.
