Ten years after her disastrous stint at Runway, playing slave to Queen of Fashion Miranda Priestly in a job ‘a million girls would die for’, Andy Sachs finally has her life back on track.
Now in charge of her own magazine and set to marry the man of her dreams, things are a whole world away from the 24-hour coffee runs, six-inch heels and size zero figures she left behind. Her career is on the rise with worldwide A-listers clamouring to be interviewed by her. In spite of some setbacks, she finally feels more closer to her friends and family than ever. And her love life’s about to be sealed with Max, the handsome millionaire/former playboy, who wants nothing more than to settle down and start a family with her.
Everything seems perfect.
However, with her life now in such high demand and a constant schedule of meeting the crème de la crème of New York society, she can’t help but feel the shadow of the ‘devil’ she left behind lurking in the background. Could Andy really have escaped Miranda that easily?
Revenge Wears Prada is the captivating sequel to Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 bestseller The Devil Wears Prada, a hilarious look at the modern day fashion industry which was developed into an award-winning film starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. Fans of both the book and film alike have long-awaited the day we get to revisit Andy and Miranda and, finally, Weisberger, has granted our wish.
Whilst I felt the book’s beginning was a little cheesy and predictable (Andy waking up on the morning of her wedding and finding out a deep, dark secret), the story definitely improves with each turn of the page. Characters from the previous book continue to pop up, and more and more background is added to give us a full idea of what Andy’s life has been like up until now.
Whereas the focus on the previous book was on the hellish antics of Miranda Priestly, this time we get to see a little more of who Andy is and how her life has been affected in the last ten years. It is this detailed history of Andy’s life that actually endears her to us more and helps us see and understand Andy in a different way, as a clearer, more three-dimensional character this time around.
That isn’t to say that Revenge is without Miranda Priestly. While there’s definitely less of her presence gracing the pages this time around, readers and fans of the ‘devil’ herself won’t be disappointed. I was especially thrilled to see the return of Emily too, Andy’s former bitchy colleague from Runway, now working alongside our heroine yet again. The combination of Andy’s sensitive and sensible attitude and Emily’s high-maintenance and hell-bent approaches make for some fabulously laugh-out-loud moments.
I also enjoyed how Weisberger has been careful to paint Andy's life in a way her readers can connect with yet again: it's been ten years since the last book and Andy, her author, and her audience have grown up and changed a lot since then. It is refreshing that Weisberger has taken this on board and tinted Andy's perspective with an older, more mature outlook - rather than attempt to cling to the past - so that we can continue to identify with the characters we remember.
Overall, if you’re a fan of Weisberger’s or the first book, or even looking for an entertaining and light-hearted read, Revenge Wears Prada is one to pick up. While it does have a slow start, both the story and range of wonderfully drawn-out characters, will soon have you turning the pages for hours, unable to look away.
Those who’ve yet to read the original, The Devil Wears Prada, should definitely give that a go first before picking this gem up. I can guarantee you that both are worth it.
