A hug's a hug, OK? You either do, or you don't. Some people might be a little more enthusiastic about the process whilst others are more elegant in the execution of the hug, but basically you just get on and do it and then forget about it, right?

Wrong. There's now a whole book devoted to the art of awkwardly squeezing someone with affection. You will, of course, need a completely open mind (and open arms, but that probably goes without saying) so that you can assimilate not only where you've been going wrong but evaluate what your hugging style has said about you in the past. It might even be that you'll be so self-conscious about hugs that you'll be completely unable to perform for quite some time and will never again be able to hug unthinkingly. Think carefully before you read as this could be life changing...

You might be laughing as you read through the book, but you'll be learning as you do. You'll need to master the basics of who to hug (fraught with difficulties, that one) as well as who not to hug. More advanced studies include how to hug (study the diagrams carefully) and when not to hug. You can't work that one out by a process of elimination as there are specific situations which you must avoid AT ALL COSTS.

My personal favourite is the Manly Lean and Pat Hug, so called because only the upper part of the body makes contact, with the lower parts being carefully kept apart. As the illustration shows it's best achieved over a ravine. Those in long distance relationships would do well to emulate the I Taped the Phone to the Pillow Hug, whilst the Over Achiever Hug is best studied to ensure that you don't fall into this category, rather than for hints as to how to make it work.

It's gigglingly funny and great fun can be had putting the names of friends to the different styles of hugs. (No - I am NOT going to tell you.) It would make a lovely present. Alternatively you could buy it as a present and then keep it for yourself. But don't tell anyone that it was my suggestion.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

Anyone seriously looking for hints on how to behave could do a lot worse than study The Bluffer's Guide to Etiquette (Bluffer's Guides) by William Hanson. For the latest from someone who would definitely come into the category of 'who not to hug', try Still Reigning by The Queen.
