A week in the Scottish Wilderness doesn't exactly sound fun, not to Alice King, but that's what she's about to embark on. Her and her classmates are off on an activity holiday together – walking, climbing, caving. Alice is fortunately put in a cabin with her best friend Cass, so things can't be too bad. But, then Tara Chambers, the popular girl, gets put in their cabin too- things definitely just got worse. Tara, though beautiful is powerful, mean and likes nothing more than putting people down.
After making each of them feel like a piece of dirt, Cass has had enough. She hatched a plan with Polly, one of the other girls in the cabin who has brunt the full force of Tara's bitchiness. They're going to teach Tara a lesson. After convincing Alice and Rae, the emo and final occupant of the cabin, to join in they are set to go. But what starts out as a joke, turns horribly wrong and leaves Tara dead.
This isn't the type of book I normally read, so I was a little sceptical, but I loved it. Its dark, it's gritty and it feels real. Alice is such a well written character; you really feel what she's going through. In fact all the characters are well written – believable. Told through the eyes of Alice when she gets home this book is fast paced and gripping. You really can't help but feel sorry for her – her and Tara were friends once. Plus, now she's falling for Tara's brother, Jack. She's lost her best friend, Cass, who is ignoring what they did.
This is a great book that is hard to put down and hard to forget.
If you liked this book I recommend you read Black Rabbit Summer by Kevin Brooks or The Road of the Dead also by Kevin Brooks for more dark and gritty thrillers.
