One morning Emily Coleman got up early, took a few possessions and all the money in her bank account with her - and left home. She left her husband, Ben and her beloved Charlie. What sort of a wife, a mother does that? She left her comfortable home near Manchester and headed for London and anonymity, fetching up on the first night in a flea pit of a lodging house. But - before the week was out she'd made a friend - Angel - and she had a temporary job as a receptionist in an advertising agency. Luckily she had her passport from before her marriage and it was a simple transition for Emily Coleman to become Kat Brown.

Summary: The sort of thriller which keeps you reading 'just a few more pages, just another chapter' and which delivers some powerful twists. A very good read. | |

Emily and Ben had had their problems recently but no one would have expected her to run away. Now, her twin sister was a different matter. Caroline had always been the wild child, the problem and the sisters had never got on well. Emily had always tried to placate Caroline, only to find that it was impossible. The more she did - the more she could do. It was doubtful that their mother had ever loved Caroline and their father was best known for his philandering. Caroline's behaviour reflected every one of the slights she'd ever perceived. So why did Emily - the normal one, the one with the law degree who married an accountant, run away?
You might have to suspend disbelief just a little bit about the ease with which our reborn Kat picks up employment, but the rest of the book is tightly plotted and information is drip-fed to you. Even then I didn't guess the twist. It wasn't that I had an idea but was proved wrong, or that I suspected what was behind it but didn't manage to pull all the clues together: I simply had no idea whatsoever and when it was laid down in front of me I felt as though I'd been punched.
The book's a keeper too. Next time round you'll know how it all works out but there's a great deal of pleasure to be had in rereading and seeing just how you were gently misled - and how ready you were to be led astray. I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag: it's a long time since I've been so convincingly hoodwinked and enjoyed it, to boot!
If this sort of book appeals then we think that you might also enjoy A Room Swept White by Sophie Hannah.
