Just as chocolate reindeer and bunnies signal seasonal change via the supermarket aisle, so too can the books that pop through my letterbox. My Mummy tells me loudly and clearly that Mothers' Day is coming, though this delightful book would work at any time of year.
Who doesn't love the Mr Men and Little Miss characters? They are timeless, classic, entertaining, endearing and super fun. So now, even if you have the full set, there are new titles being magiced up for you to enjoy.
In My Mummy we learn of all the ways Mummy is wonderful. And, funnily enough, her positive attributes are quite a lot like those singular, nominal traits beheld by certain Little Misses. For example, she is happy like Little Miss Sunshine, she is curious about things like, erm, Little Miss Curious, and she enjoys her cake, just like Little Miss Greedy. Ooops. Though most of the Little Misses are not named, you'll recognise their faces if you are a fan of the series. Plus, their activities really do give them away, even if we have a slight vocabulary change, such as the word cheeky used to describe Little Miss Naughty or the use of Little Miss Tidy to show Mummy quite simply likes to keep things stored neatly away. (As an aside, I'm not sure I would describe rice, sugar and pepper as 'interesting' but I can let that one slide).
Throughout, the pages have the bright, colourful illustrations you would expect. Some are simple portraits and some are full scenes, but all are familiar and have a friendly feel to them. At the end of the book there is a chance to record why your Mummy is so special, and what she does to make you laugh, what she likes doing and so on. It's a nice touch.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending us this book to review. Even if we weren't heading to a certain Sunday in March, it would still be a splendid read.
If you've exhausted all the character titles, the new releases such as Mr Men Adventure with Dinosaurs by Roger Hargreaves keep the fun going for a few more pages.
