Summary: A cracker of a thriller - I intended to read it over several days, but finished it in less than twenty-four hours. There's an excellent plot and characters you really root for. Highly recommended.

Finn Westlake was first amused and then horrified when he saw the attractive young woman jumping up and down in the road as his jeep turned the corner: the amusement came from the fact that she was wearing just soaking-wet bra and panties. It was when he saw the tears streaming down her face that he realised that there was a serious problem. Diana McGuire's father's plane had crashed into the river and she had tried and failed to get him out. Sending her to get more help Finn dived into the river and managed to extract Chester McGuire and his business associate, Sandy Moseley, but whilst checking that there was no one else in the plane he was seriously injured.

His recovery was slow and painful and it seemed appropriate to accept an invitation to stay with the McGuires at their New England home, if only for a few days, but despite a slow and awkward start to the break, Finn and Diana developed a strong bond and a loving relationship. It would be put under pressure, though, when Finn, an engineer diver, discovered problems with the structural supports under the bridge which linked Cautuxet Island to the mainland. To him the solution was simple: immediate action needed to be taken by those with the authority to do so. What he hadn't appreciated was that he was getting involved in corrupt local politics where lives matter less than profit - and his was the immediate life to be put on the line.

I'd planned to read this book over several days, but once I started reading I finished it within twenty-four hours. It's a cracker. The characters reel you in to start with. Diana McGuire's not looking for a relationship: she's just been badly let down and she's lost all confidence in her judgement of men. Finn's good looking, brave and single, but he makes it clear to Diana that he's not looking to settle down. He's not exactly a commitment phobic, he just seems to have a low boredom threshold where some things are concerned and that includes women. Diana's simply fulfilling an offer made to Finn when he was in hospital. The relationship grows steadily and it feels real. The couple are an elegant contrast to the self-serving society which surrounds them and I was rooting for them.

The plot's excellent and extremely well paced. I love a plot as many-layered as this one: there's real depth to it and it's utterly credible, and even when you get to the bottom of one problem there are more on the horizon. It's obvious that Patricia Watkins has done her research well, but the plot wears it lightly and there's no sense that every bit of knowledge has been shoehorned in, regardless of whether or not it's appropriate. Instead you get a sense of everything slotting together, of a story which has been carefully constructed. I loved it and I'd like to thank the author for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

If this book appeals then you might also enjoy another of Patricia's books: Voyage into Limbo.
