If you haven't read the first book in this series, STOP READING NOW! NOW! Spoilers ahoy!
Go on. Run along.
Gone? Good.
Just making sure...
Ok. Let's begin.
This is where we are. Zombie apocalypse. Ex-racist B Smith isn't your common-or-garden zombie. She's a revitalised and, although undead, can think and feel and speak. She's caught in an overarching war between two brothers in possession of two viruses. One would kill all the undead, leaving the surviving humans to rebuild the world. The other would kill all the surviving humans, getting rid of Earth's most destructive species once and for all.
Sounds like a simple choice, right? But, in B Smith's world, nothing is ever that easy. Double-crossed for the nth time, B has discovered that the kindly Doctor Oystein isn't battling for humanity's future as she had thought. And so once again, her choices are narrowed and she will have to conjure an option out of thin air if she is to move forward. But conjuring options isn't that easy when you are mind-controlled by the Owl Man.
But you know B: she never gives up, even when everything seems entirely hopeless.
This last instalment of Darren Shan's zombie series is epic. It's as full of graphic gore as you could wish, has a plot twist on every other page, and includes the biggest battle of the sequence yet. Expect death and destruction. Expect desperate rearguard actions. Expect to turn the pages until you are out of breath. But don't expect to guess what happens at the end! I didn't! All I can tell you about it is that Shan manages to balance his nihilistic themes with a shout-out-loud dollop of surprise and I loved it. That's all you're getting.
I truly have enjoyed Zom B. It's been a rollercoaster of a ride and, while I still think the episodic structure would have been better condensed into fewer, more meaningful individual instalments, it's been a satisfying journey full of entertainment and engagement.
I award Shan one of his very own OBEs (Order of B Smith's Entrails) and am looking forward to whatever he comes up with next.
More deliciously gory undead series you might enjoy include The Enemy by Charlie Higson and Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry.
