Wibbly Pig has just returned from a party and he's sorting through his party bag. He's got quite a haul, but can't hold everything at once, so he ties his stuffed toy, Pigley, to the balloon. Up the balloon floats, up, up and away. However is Wibbly Pig going to get Pigley back?
Every child has tried to hold too many things at once. Every child has tried to get something down that's too high for them to reach. Not only does Mick Inkpen immediately strike a chord with every young reader, but he also manages to turn it into a sort of Mission Impossible for little 'uns. Ok, maybe that's overstating it a little, but there's something thrilling about Wibbly Pig's attempts to recover his beloved toy. Despite the thrills and adventure, it's all told with a brilliantly pared-down style that never wastes a word, yet says everything it could want to.
Mick Inkpen's illustrations are equally sparse and equally perfect. As with all his previous work, the characters ooze charm and you want to be their friend. They're sweet and cuddly without being sickly. They're fresh, without being flash for the sake of being flash. They're just perfect for comforting, friendly and just plain lovely picture books.
Although the simple story pitches Don't Lose Pigley at the youngest of book fans, such is the quality that anyone not quite reading themselves will enjoy the tale. It's a delightful story that they'll love reading with you again and again. Recommended.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
