Tutu Tilly really loves ballet. She's been learning for about a year now, and her ballet school is about to put on its end of year show. She is both excited and nervous. But, of course, disaster strikes...the wrong costumes are sent and the tutus and shoes aren't pink...they're blue!

This is, in case you haven't guessed yet, a very girly book. Tilly loves everything pink, she likes swirling and twirling, and when she dreams, she dreams about butterflies and swans and pretty ribbons! The disaster with the dresses doesn't turn out to be such a terrible thing after all as, after a calamitous dress rehearsal, it turns out Tilly can dance just as well in a blue tutu as in a pink one. Phew!

The illustrations throughout the book are very sweet, with lots of happy little girls obviously having a marvellous time doing ballet. There's a mixture of large, full page pictures as well as smaller ones that break up the text, all in lovely pastel colours with realistic looking characters. The story is simple, so it's nice and easy to follow for little ones, and it is probably only the parents reading it to their little darlings who may gag slightly over Tutu Tilly's rather prima donna-ish ending.

My four year old enjoyed it, but as she's just as likely to be found playing police stations with her garage as dressed up in her princess costume so it doesn't seem to have become one of her favourite bedtime stories. If your little girl insists that every item of clothing is either pink or covered in sparkles then this will surely be a popular reading choice. It would make a lovely gift for a budding ballerina though others less dance-mad may wish to try it before they buy a copy.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.
