The day starts very peacefully as Annie wakes in her own bed and listens to the silence. She decides that it's the perfect time to creep into her parents' bed:
They're a cosy snuggle sandwich.
She's the jam and they're the bread!
Mama then takes Annie and her teddy, Edward Bear, downstairs all ready for a comforting warm milk. It's really peaceful; that is up until the moment that Mama roars for the rest of the family to get up. At the same time, Annie drops Edward Bear out of her high chair and no one notices. Soon there's mayhem when Papa and Annie's brother and sister come downstairs rushing to get ready for work and school. Then suddenly they are all gone and peace and quiet exists again. Annie and Mama search for teddy and discover that he likes a big snuggle too! So eventually:
There's only her and Mama.
No more fuss and clutter!
Now THEY'RE the snuggle sandwich,
and TED's the peanut butter!
This is a very appealing story that has a warm glow to it. We love the idea of Annie and her parents making their own snuggle sandwich and the analogy of Mama and Papa as the bread whilst Annie is the jam filling. This idea is also returned to throughout the story with various different snuggle sandwiches being formed. My daughter was delighted with this idea and instantly wanted us to make our own snuggle sandwich although, in ours, she wanted to be chocolate spread!
We also enjoyed the way that the story is written in rhyming couplets. These give it a great rhythm and it's also fun for younger children to try and supply some of the rhyming words. The illustrations also add to the enjoyment and demonstrate perfectly how good it must feel to be part of a snuggle sandwich. They're also very bright and colourful.
Overall, this is a thoroughly entertaining book which is made for snuggling up together and providing a cosy read just before bedtime.
