There once lived a Greedy Guzzler who was always eating and during one particular day:
He had munched breakfast, crunched elevenses, chomped twelveses and guzzled the most enormous lunch.
The problem was that apparently all this food was still not enough and he was still looking for a little something. The little somethings in question lived in a cave on the other side of the hill and were very worried when they realised that the Guzzler was approaching. They waited, quivering and quaking, until luckily, the very little Minniwiggler had an idea. He suggested that they offered the Guzzler lots of other tempting little things such as glob fruit. This had the desired effect for, as soon as the Guzzler saw the fruit, he gobbled them up straight away.
Unfortunately though, this was not the end of it because the Guzzler then decided that he needed a plump little something. There were a certain number of the little somethings who knew that they were not plump so they started to feel safe but what about the rest? It was time for the Minniwuggler to come up with a good idea which of course he does. In fact he continues to think of good ideas until there are only two little somethings left that the Guzzler might be interested in – one of which is himself. As he bravely confronts his foreboding enemy, he suddenly realises that the Guzzler is not as frightening as he seemed. In fact, his motive in looking for a little something was far different to what they had all thought. There’s a lovely surprise in store but if you want to know what it is, you’ll just have to find a little someone to share this delightful story with.
This is a delightful story that is made all the more special by the unexpected twist at the end. This is reassuring because no little somethings get eaten and even scary monsters are not as cruel and nasty as they are sometimes betrayed. Once you have read this book with your child they will realise this, but some might find it a little scary to start with. However, a book with such cute characters cannot fail to appeal to young and old alike. It’s also worth mentioning that Jill Lewis and Ali Pye have created more stories featuring the little somethings so I’m sure that it won’t take long for your little ones to become happily acquainted with the likes of Miniwiggler, Sparky, Little Hogwash, Twiglittle, and many more of these endearing characters.
All the pages are very appealing with clever illustrations and the text presented in an interesting way with lots of words in big, bold capital letters to add impact. Each page is a visual treat and needs time spent exploring what is going on.
The story is very enjoyable and reassuring and, as a bonus, there is even a recipe to make something delicious – Nosh Biscuits! Finally there is a spotter guide to the Little Somethings and once they have discovered this page, young readers will surely want to read the story again seeing which ones they can spot.
