Summary: Follow up to time travel novel After Eden. Again, this is more of a romantic adventure novel than serious sci-fi but it is enjoyable from that perspective. This time, the action takes place in the future.

Chasing Stars is the follow-up to After Eden - in which Ryan travels back in time to save the world from disaster by preventing the discovery of a far-off planet. In so doing, he falls in love with Eden. In this second story, Ryan travels back once again - this time to save Eden's life. And now Eden must make a sacrifice, too. The boy she loves has given up everything to save her and now she must give up everything to save him...

... which is how Eden finds herself one hundred years in the future. She will never see her friends or her family again. She has only one shot at saving Ryan. Can she pull it off?

Chasing Stars, like its predecessor, will appeal most to readers who like getting involved with characters and enjoy a nice love story in which the lovers have obstacles thrown in their way. There isn't much kissing in the book but have no doubt that it's a love story: Ryan and Eden are determined to be together, no matter the cost. And the cost is great. Each must risk - and lose - everything else to gain the prize of the other. And you can't help but root for them. You don't need endless kissing and heavy breathing scenes to prove love and I really enjoyed this aspect of the book - it really is utterly romantic.

Helen Douglas also writes beautifully and the story is a breeze to read whilst also being completely absorbing. I read Chasing Stars in one sitting and missed lunch in so doing.

However, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that fans of time travel and/or sci fi are likely to be less satisfied by Chasing Stars. The future world envisaged here isn't particularly inspired - it's pretty much 2014 with extra vegetarian food, thinner computer screens and self-drive cars. Otherwise, society doesn't seem to have changed very much at all and this seems unlikely in an environment where time travel is possible. The eagle-eyed will spot a few plot holes and paradoxes, too.

Like After Eden, then, Chasing Stars comes recommended to fans of romantic fiction. It's a great love story and beautifully written. Fans of sci fi might want to look for something with a little more substance.

If time slip romance appeals to you, then you might also enjoy Time After Time by Tamara Ireland Stone.
